Nokia N1 Review with System Specification

- Wednesday, November 19 No Comments

A bit over a year after selling its mobile phone business to Microsoft, Nokia just jumped back to the consumer market at the main stage of Slush 2014 in Helsinki, Finland and the first device coming out from the new Nokia is running Android.

Nokia N1 is a 7.9” tablet retailing for 249€ before taxes. This is the first consumer devices Nokia has announced after selling their Windows Mobile -focused mobile phone unit to Microsoft earlier this year. The N1 has 2.3 GHz 64-bit Intel Atom processor, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB internal storage and it’s 7,9” screen shows it’s content on 2048×1536 resolution. Operating system is Android Lollipop, that features the Nokia Z Launcher as its default user interface.

After a successful pilot launch during the summer, Nokia Z Launcher is also made available as a separate download to all Android devices starting from today.

Nokia’s Head of Product Business Sebastian Nyström was describing the company’s journey after the mobile business was sold, and emphasised that big change also brings big opportunities. As they were determined to stay in the consumer business, switching to Android now associates them with 84,7% of the world’s mobile consumers, up from 2,5% it was with Windows Mobile (IDC Q2/2014).

According to Nyström, Nokia was and still is great tech, was and still is great in engineering and was and still is great in design. The impressive Android tablet and a competitive push to a crowded market shows that Nyström has basis in his claims. And Nokia is not anymore in business for sales & manufacturing, they are launching the N1 together with (currently unnamed) Chinese partner, first launching it for the lunar new year in China, and then rolling out to the rest of the world.

Microsoft: Nokia Lumia 1520 pre-order_NewVijay

Microsoft is going the extra mile with this particular pre-order. For everyone who pre-orders the phone, they'll throw in a $50 Microsoft Store app card as well as an $20 app gift card provided by Nokia. That's not all - there's also a free Lumia 1520 flip cover (valued at $39.99) included as well. And if that's not enough, there's a free download of Halo: Spartan Assault for Windows Phone to top things off.

Microsoft's offer will end on November 21, while the device starts shipping the next day. The Nokia Lumia 1520 sells for $199 and will initially be available in black, red and white, with yellow to come later this year.

However, if you fancy yourself an unlocked Lumia 1520, then retailer Unlocked Mobiles will be happy to oblige. The SIM-free Lumia 1520 will cost you a hefty £594.98, and is scheduled to start shipping on November 25.

iPhone 5s vs Lumia 1020 vs LG G2 Fight

- Friday, October 11 3 Comments
You know what they say - three is a crowd. On a second thought though, no one here's got romance on their mind. The three-horse race has had its highs and lows, but it's the playoffs and we got a front-row seat. It's not about heroes and villains anymore, everyone's a bit of both. Each phone here will look at the other two and see the worst of both worlds. Now, can we keep a cool head and try and see the whole picture?

One thing's certain, the Apple iPhone 5s, the LG G2 and the Nokia Lumia 1020 just don't mix. The three platforms are usually targeting a completely different set of users. But each of these gadgets is the best of its species and that's the cross section of everything the industry has to offer at this point.

Apple's iPhone 5s has just hit the shelves, setting a new sales record to be broken yet again a year from now. It looks the same as iPhone 5, but is powered by a brand new 64-bit A7 chip and runs the impressively redesigned iOS 7. Easily the standard-setting touch interface has just got better and the content Apple users have access to is second to none.

Apple iPhone 5s over the LG G2 and Nokia Lumia 1020:

64-bit Apple A7 chipset and PowerVR (Series 6) G6430 GPU
iOS 7 with Siri voice assistant
Access to the impressively rich App Store
    Touch ID fingerprint scanner
    Premium aluminum build
    Compact size

The LG G2 is the top Android smartphone at the moment (this may as well be the most precarious position of them all, considering the rate at which droid flagships are released). But still, the timing is spot-on and the G2 being what it is has nothing to do with luck. LG has equipped it with the latest Snapdragon 800 chipset, a massive 1080p display and Android 4.2. They didn't shy away from experimenting either, and the result is nothing short of impressive.

LG G2 over the iPhone 5s and Nokia Lumia 1020:

Huge 5.2" IPS True-HD+ FullHD display
Snapdragon 800 chipset with Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB of RAM
1080p@60fps video recording, dual-video recording, video stabilization
2.1MP front camera with 1080p@30fps videos
    Great video playback capabilities
Stereo FM radio with RDS (over the iPhone 5s only)
Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with LG Optimus UI

Finally, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is the most powerful Windows Phone smartphone and by far the best cameraphone, with a 41MP camera sensor, optical image stabilization, xenon and LED, and even 4x lossless zoom. The video recording is limited to 1080p@30fps, but thanks to the HAAC microphones and the lossless 4x zoom you can even film at concerts without compromising the audio or video quality. The Lumia 1020 also has an AMOLED display and a premium polycarbonate unibody, while Windows Phone 8 has an unmatched office package and Nokia's free lifetime voice-guided navigation that also works offline.

Nokia Lumia 1020 over the Apple iPhone 5s and LG G2:

    AMOLED display
41 MP camera (38 MP effective, 7152 x 5368 pixels, 1/1.5'' sensor size, 1.12 µm pixel size), Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization, auto/manual focus, Xenon & LED flash
4x lossless digital zoom, high-amplitude audio capture (HAAC) microphones
    Polycarbonate unibody
Windows Phone 8 with MS Office, Nokia Drive+, Nokia Pro Cam and Nokia Creative Studio

It's not like each of those phones is only as good as its weakest spot, but it's not as straightforward either as simply praise this one's camera, that one's app store or the other one's full-HD screen. This can easily get out of control and into a three-ring circus, but we're gonna give it a try anyway.

How to Block Calls & SMS in Nokia WP8 Lumia

- Saturday, August 10 No Comments
A new update of the Extras + Info service app for Nokia Lumia brings options for call and SMS blocking. The update is available to all Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia smartphones, but the new functionality works only on those running on the GDR2 a.k.a. Amber update.

In case you are running WP8 with Amber (GRD2) on your Lumia, then you can update your Extras + Info app. Then go to Settings, Extras + Info and find the call + SMS filter. Here you can add numbers and all incoming communication from those will be ignored automatically.

Leaked Nokia Tablet Runs with Windows 8 RT Snapdragon 800

- Tuesday, August 6 No Comments
The long awaited tablet from Nokia seems to be in the final stages of development and has begun to appear on websites performance testing. The model, called the RX-114 is equipped with a Snapdragon processor 800 - unheard of in non-Android devices - and runs Windows 8 RT

Leaked Nokia Tablet with Windows 8

According to the data present in the service GFXbench Tested model features a display HD (720p) resolution 1371 x 771; despite Windows 8 already have supported the resolution Full HD (1080p).

This will be the Finnish manufacturer's first foray in the tablet segment, which in the case of Windows 8 RT, still lacks a model to match competitors like iPad and Nexus 7. The failure of RT Microsoft Surface tablet and lack of support from giants like Asus, Acer and Dell, who criticized RT for Windows 8 not a product "attractive", are obstacles to the growth of the system in the segment.

In July, images of a supposed Nokia tablet with Windows 8 RT emerged on the internet. The leak gave strength to the rumors, but there was no confirmation of the company. This test, however, seems to indicate that the Finnish manufacturer has not given up betting this lucrative segment. By the time the company did not comment on any of the rumors, but information should emerge in the coming months

Nokia Lumia 1020 Preview & Feature Specifications

- Sunday, July 14 No Comments
Their Windows Phone endeavors may have not been all smooth sailing for Nokia, but the Finnish company finally came up with the smartphone to beat - the Lumia 1020. Combining the best of both worlds - solid smartphone experience and an unrivaled camera, the Lumia 1020 promises to become the hero device that both Nokia and Microsoft so desperately need at this moment.
Nokia has been the king of cameraphones since the golden days of Symbian. The legendary Nokia N95 won our first 5 megapixel shootout, and it was shortly followed by the N82, which added a xenon flash to the mix. Symbian's fate then took a sharp turn for the worse, but even so, the emblematic sharpshooter Nokia N8 came along. Then, at the end of the Symbian era, the 808 PureView arrived and changed our understanding and expectations of cameraphones for good.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Preview & Feature Specifications_NewVijay

Unfortunately for the Finns, their WP8 cameraphone voyage didn't begin as smoothly as the Symbian journey ended. The Lumia 800 had an interesting multi-aspect sensor, which sacrificed only little resolution when shooting 16:9 stills, while the Lumia 920 was first to bring optical image stabilization (OIS) to the smartphone world, but neither of those was able to achieve the iconic status of their predecessors. Perhaps adding the PureView moniker to the Lumia 920 in an attempt to capitalize on the brand was a mistake by Nokia, as that guaranteed the smartphone will often be compared to the 808 PureView and that was a battle it was never going to win, OIS or not.

People wanted their 41MP WP8 smartphone and yesterday Nokia finally delivered. The Windows Phone ecosystem is still growing but not fast enough to compete with the big boys. Perhaps bringing the platform to the forefront of the cameraphone race is exactly the kind of push it needed. And camera aside, the Lumia 1020 delivers duly on all those vital other aspects of a modern-day smartphones with barely any compromises made.

News: Nokia might going to adopt Android Operating System (lifeline)

- Tuesday, July 2 No Comments
Many attribute Nokia's decline in recent years to its exclusive reliance on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform as its only outlet into the world of smartphones. Now one analyst argues that if Nokia has any hope of righting the ship, it must begin manufacturing Android smartphones.

News: Nokia might going to adopt Android Operating System (lifeline)_Newvijay

Pierre Ferragu of Bernstein Research urges that Nokia must "take the pill before one cannot afford to do so anymore… its exposure to the disappearing feature phone market and the lack of traction of Windows phones could cost Nokia a lot of cash in the near term, in restructuring, marketing/distribution support, and operational losses, which means it could be too late to address the problem in a couple of years."

Nokia's partnership with Microsoft has been anything but what either company was hoping for, even if recent signs are encouraging. The Finnish phone maker and the Windows Phone operating system found on many of its devices are struggling to make the smartphone the three-horse race Elop was talking about when unveiling the new strategy.

Nokia continues to rely heavily on its feature phone sales to keep finances in check, as evidenced by its most recent ad campaign for the S40-powered Nokia Asha 501. But the featurephone market, once a pillar of Nokia's dominance, is also starting to crumble. Even in the conservative Western European smartphone market, where Nokia's total shipments have dropped by 30% year-over-year.

It's unclear what would it cost for Nokia to dip its toe into the Android pool, though. On one hand Microsoft has given licenses to Samsung, HTC and Huawei to make WP-powered devices of their own despite all of those also having Android smartphones. On the other ever since day one and Microsoft Nokia made it clear that their partnership is different to that between Microsoft and the other WP OEMs.
