The Xbox Series X is basically a PC

For a long time now, Microsoft has been going out of its way to downplay the “box” part of “Xbox.” Whether it’s pledging to bring all of its first-party titles to PC, releasing some of them to platforms like Steam and the Nintendo Switch, launching its Game Pass service for Windows, or pushing xCloud streaming, the message has been clear: you don’t have to buy an Xbox to play Xbox games.

But obviously, Microsoft still plans to make Xboxes. The question, then, is this: why would anyone buy one? What is the relevance of dedicated Xbox hardware when Microsoft wants the Xbox platform to be everywhere?

With last night’s surprise reveal of the Xbox Series X, Microsoft answered that question in emphatic fashion. It is a console that looks unlike anything that has ever been released. Except, well, a gaming PC. And that’s very encouraging.

Gadgets get described as “monolithic” all the time, but I can’t think of a better application of the word than the Series X. It’s a vertically oriented, virtually featureless black slab. While it shares design language with the Xbox One X, that only serves to highlight the difference between the two. The One X was designed to be as small as possible, but the Series X screams power.

With its chunky prismatic frame, the Series X feels like it won’t be constrained in any physical dimension. It’s reminiscent of compact gaming PCs like the Corsair One. That has its drawbacks — even in horizontal orientation, it definitely won’t fit in my TV cabinet. But the advantage is that Microsoft now has a lot more thermal headroom to play with than ever before.

What is new Floating Plasma Display & How it works

- Saturday, July 4 No Comments
Is Floating Plasma Display gives 3D Experience? This is next upcoming technology. Floating Plasma will come with mobile devices & wide display television.

Welcome to Enhanced Future Word. Day by day things are getting realistic. See that teensy Tinkerbell-shaped light above? That's not CGI -- that's a real floating display, and it's completely touchable too. Mid-air plasma displays aren't that prolific yet, but they're not exactly new either.

However, floating lights created using existing techniques can usually burn skin, since every "voxel" (a pixel in 3D space) is made by heating molecules with nanosecond lasers. In order to make them safe to touch, a team of researchers from the University of Tsukuba, Utsunomiya University, Nagoya Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo, used lasers that fire bursts of plasma every few femtoseconds instead.

A fem to second is one millionth of one billionth of a second, whereas a nanosecond is one billionth of a second. These shorter pulses can't damage your skin, making the final product touchable. In addition, the objects can respond in real time (e.g., a heart can break in two when touched), as well as give off haptic feedback. At this point, the researchers' femtosecond lasers can only render images up to eight cubic millimeters in size, with resolutions reaching up to 200,000 voxels per second.

They're hoping to scale the technology up in the future, though, to become more useful to potential customers. Who knows -- this might be the beginning of interactive holograms, mid-air billboards and maybe even floating touchscreen computers like Tony Stark's.

Apple to allow Android smartphones to get traded in at Apple Stores for gift cards towards iPhone

Apple to allow Android smartphones to get traded in at Apple Stores for gift cards towards iPhone
Apple’s recycling and trade-in program has been around for quite some time, but has specifically been built for trading in older Apple products to get newer gadgets.
According to a report published by 9to5Mac, and citing unnamed sources, Apple will be shuffling around its recycling and trade-in program to include Android smartphones for the first time ever. This is meant to boost sales of iPhones within its Apple Stores, a noted mission statement of Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook. Now, moving forward, or once this program starts, Apple Store employees will value a potential Android trade-in based on its cosmetic appearance, as well as its functional condition.
The new program is set to kick off in the coming weeks, and if it does, it means that customers will be able to walk into an Apple Store with an Android smartphone, trade it in and get the set amount put on an Apple gift card towards the purchase of an iPhone. Apple Store employees will allegedly be able to transfer contacts from the Android phone to the new iPhone, but other data will have to be handled by the customer.
Apple’s recycle and trade-in program has been getting better since it launched in 2013, and last summer it expanded to include the iPad lineup.
If this new trade-in program comes to light, it would certainly be a stark change for Apple’s standard operating procedure, but boosting iPhone sales would certainly be an incentive to start something like this.
What do you think? Is this a long time coming?

Sony launches Android based New Walkman players

- Monday, September 30 No Comments
Before there was the iPod, there was the Sony Walkman. One of the oldest brands in the industry, the Walkman name was once synonymous with portable music players before Apple came along and changed everything.

Sony launches Android based New Walkman players

But even after all these years and waning interest, Sony continues to make Walkman players and has kept them moving with the times. This week they announced two new members of the series, called the ZX1 and the F880.

The ZX1 is the top of the line model and comes with an enormous 128GB of built-in flash memory. It also supports 24-bit/196kHz audio playback in various formats, including FLAC and ALAC and has a new S-Master HX Amplifier for high quality output. On the front is a 4.0-inch, 854×480 resolution display and the ZX1 runs on Android 4.1 with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and Google Play Store support.

The F880 is the slightly cheaper model and retains most of the features of the ZX1. It does have a smaller, 3.5-inch display, however, and comes in 16/32/64GB capacities in black, white, blue and pink colors.
The Walkman ZX1 will be priced at 75,000 yen and the F880 for 27,000, 30,000 and 40,000 yen for the 16, 32 and 64GB models, respectively. Both devices will be available in Japan starting October 19, with no information yet on international availability.

- Monday, September 2 No Comments
A prototype Samsung Galaxy Gear unit found itself in the hands of our colleagues from Venturebeat who got to spend some time with the smartwatch and spilled some beans about it along the way.

So, here it is. What you see above is a snapshot of a Galaxy Gear promo video, as the media wasn't allowed to take photos of the actual prototype it had. Anyway, the display of the Galaxy Gear is 3" in size and is of the OLED variety. The screen is square, but sadly its resolution wasn't disclosed.

The prototype Galaxy Gear itself is colored in dark gray and black and sports built-in speakers in the strap. Naturally, there'll be more colors on the way, but they weren't detailed. On the top side, there's also a 4MP camera, which is used to record health data as well as taking pictures. There's a special piece of software which recognizes if the food is fat or contains grains.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear is going to be able to receive voice commands through the S Voice app. Thanks to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the smartwatch is able to connect to other smartphones, too. This allows it to sync call logs giving you the option to initiate a call from the watch to a Samsung smartphone. Wi-Fi connectivity also means social media integration with Twitter and Facebook.

Venturebeat reports the Galaxy Gear's battery is going to be good for up to 10 hours. The battery capacity wasn't disclosed, but from the photos you can clearly see that the Gear is going to be quite big.

IFA is just a couple of days away and the Samsung Unpacked event is promising to be a blast with the Galaxy Note III and Galaxy Gear smartwatch making their first official appearance.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is working on its own Android-powered gaming console and smartwatch — and a replacement for the Nexus Q is also on the way. The report states that Mountain View hopes to ship at least one of the products by this fall, and plans to both design and market them itself. In recent months, Android gaming consoles like Ouya and the GameStick have received a tremendous amount of attention — the Ouya went on sale at retailers just this week — but according to the Journal's sources Google's move to create a console is also based on expectations that Apple will add gaming to a future version of the Apple TV.

Google is currently working on the next iteration of the Android operating system, which will reportedly be better suited for the low-cost smartphones that are taking off in developing counties. Google is said to be developing its own low-cost smartphones — a one-two punch that could prove effective against efforts like Mozilla's Firefox OS. Through its Google X hardware facilities the company is also reportedly working on "next-generation" Android devices separate from the hardware its subsidiary Motorola is developing.

What's it for? We have no idea. We just know we want one.
