With the tablet market reaching near-saturation, another slab that's just as thin, light and powerful as the rest of them will hardly bring crowds to the stores. Every maker is desperate to get some breathing space but few dare look for a space to call their own.

Quick to take a gamble, Samsung is trying a new size again but this time around it's not what you would call a vacant niche that the Koreans are to develop. The Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 has the scene set for its arrival by the LG G Pad 8.3 but it's actually two generations of iPad minis that the new Samsung slate is keener to meet.

Is there a bit of arrogance in that? Well, there may be but the new Pro lineup means business like never before. It isn't just a hardware upgrade hiding behind the same old Android/TouchWIz combo either. The Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 is vying to put Samsung's compact range of tablets back on the map - done playing second fiddle to the Notes.

Samsung has completely redesigned the TouchWiz user interface with a brand new homescreen and notification area, a new way of handling widgets, advanced multi-tasking with multi-view and floating apps. There's even a new business-grade office package. And although there is still Android KitKat below the magazine-like UI, the whole thing feels fresh and new.

Google announces the Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 KitKat, on sale today for $349

It's about time. The Google-backed and LG-manufactured Nexus 5 is now really a reality, after countless rumors and leaks (a few of them coming from Google itself). The new device, which predictably boasts the latest and greatest version of Android known as KitKat (or 4.4, if you're so inclined), takes its place in the spotlight in place of the Nexus 4. And, despite coming out at a slightly higher price point than last year's Nexus, it still takes the cake in terms of features, components and other specs.

Now that it's ready for the public, let's take a deeper look at the Nexus 5, which will be available on the Play Store today, in both white and black, starting at $349 for AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint (sorry Verizon customers).

We'd like to say we have a few surprises in store for you, but we don't really. So many details about the Nexus 5 leaked ahead of time, and almost all of them have proven to be true. Under the hood is a 2.3Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 800 and 2GB of RAM, pushing pixels to a glorious 5-inch 1080p display.

LG has also seen fit to include wireless charging again, so you won't have to wear out that micro-USB port keeping the 2,300 mAh battery juiced, you can use it to power a TV over Slimport instead. You'll also find LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi and NFC on board -- basically if there is a method of connecting to another device, the Nexus 5 has it.

 

The design moves away from its predecessor's primarily glass construction and embraces plastic. But not the cheap-feeling shiny kind, instead it boasts a "silky texture" according to Sundar Pichai. In fact, it's quite reminiscent of the redesigned Nexus 7 that debuted earlier this year. The front is still sheathed in Gorilla Glass, Gorilla Glass 3 to be specific, and otherwise it's pretty much unadorned. Sure, if you look you can spot the front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera and speaker grille, but it's mostly an uninterrupted expanse of black.

In our hands-on with the device, we were incredibly impressed with the clarity and sharpness of the 1080p display. The edge-to-edge glass gives the Nexus 5 an unquestionably premium feel, even with the slivers of bezel adorning the top and bottom. One of the benefits of Gorilla Glass 3 is its thinness, which results in a relatively slim phone overall. Though it's a pretty small detail, even the buttons on the sides of the phone are made of a technical ceramic material, which certainly feels better than regular plastic buttons.

Additionally, the "silky texture" does indeed feel a lot like the soft touch matte finish we know and love from the Nexus 7. Both the white and black versions have the same silky textured backing, so all you have to worry about is color preference. There are very slight contours on the sides of the phone that contribute to a comfortable cradle in the hand, and the curved top and bottom means there's no fear of the handset digging into your palm. As far as performance goes, swiping through menus and launching apps felt snappy, and so did capturing shot after shot with the phone's 8-megapixel camera.

Even though it was widely expected, and leaked, we're still pretty excited about the redesigned rear-facing camera. Sure, it's still an 8-megapixel sensor, but it now boasts optical image stabilization (OIS) for reducing blur. A small gyro and motor actuator in the lens housing move the lens on the X and Y planes to capture the clearest image possible, even if you've got the caffeine shakes.

The shutter is also quick enough to capture what Google calls HDR+ or, for the photo savvy out there, true HDR. Instead of applying algorithms to boost brightness and contrast in areas of a single photo, the Nexus 5 captures multiple images at different exposures and combines them to produce the most detail possible. It can not only fix under or over exposed images, it can even compensate for motion when trying to capture a moving target.

Google will be releasing two models: one for North America and Europe, and a second for Asia. Both of which will come in 16GB and 32GB flavors, which will cost $349 and $399, respectively. While you'll obviously be able to pick one up straight from Google, you'll also find the latest Nexus phone at Best Buy and Radio Shack. You can even buy one direct from compatible carriers, like Sprint which will be bringing the handset to its retail stores on November 8th, starting at $150. T-Mobile promises to have the Nexus 5 in stores before the holidays, but wouldn't get any more specific about release date or price.

Nexus 5 Leaked System Configuration

The upcoming Nexus 5 announcement is drawing near (just 10 days left to go) and the rumors are intensifying. Today we saw it briefly in the Google Play store and now information has surfaced detailing the memory and battery capacity of the upcoming pureblood Android.

According to unofficial sources the Nexus 5 will come with either 16 GB or 32 GB of built-in, non-expandable, storage. The addition of the bigger 32 GB variant is great news and seems to confirm Google (and LG) won't be opting for an 8 GB model this year.


Then there's the battery, which doesn't ring as high on the hype meter as the memory options. The next Nexus smartphone is said to bring a 2,300 mAh battery, which given the rumors of a 5" display and latest Snapdragon 800 processor doesn't really sound too exciting. Previous rumors of the 32GB version packing a larger 3,000 mAh juice pack have unfortunately turned out to be unfounded.

Finally said sources point to a release before the end of October, however they don't specify if that refers to a global release or just to select markets in a first wave.

LG G2 Review, features and drawbacks

While other companies were bracing for war at the IFA 2013 expo and lining up their latest phablets, LG was counting down to the G2 launch. The Koreans did a few cool tricks to promote the beast, like shooting the Earth from the stratosphere, but the G2 is an attention grabber even without the expensive PR.

LG G2 is powered by the best mobile chipset available, it has a beautiful big screen with almost no bezel to speak of, and it even runs the latest Android version. But that's not what the LG G2 is going to be known for. No, the G2 will be remembered as one of the few devices to bring true hardware innovation for the first time in many years. While most makers just keep on pushing the number of CPU cores or go overboard with screen size, LG takes a fresh approach to how you interact with a big-screen phone in the most natural way.

With high-end smartphones going bigger by the day, the hardware design is struggling to keep up and slowly turning into a disadvantage. The lock key at the top of the HTC One is nearly impossible to reach, volume rockers keep switching sides and places until the moment you start guessing instead of knowing what you are clicking on? And this is just the beginning! How about those lockscreens with unlocking routines, which are getting increasingly weirder?

We guess we didn't realize how things could've been different until we actually get to see them from a fresh perspective. No more finger stretching, using the other hand or doing some magical air gestures.

Apple Announced new iPhone 5s

Just as expected, the newly introduced Apple iPhone 5s looks the same on the outside (if you don't count the new white with gold/champagne color option). It still has the same thin 7.6mm profile and it still weighs merely 112g. However it comes with a number of changes under the hood where pretty much all the work has gone into this time around.

The A7 chipset

The iPhone 5s makes use of a radically re-engineered new chipset, called A7, which is twice as fast in CPU and GPU computations as the one in the iPhone 5.

Based on 64-bit architecture for the first time, the new iPhone 5s is said to be up to 40 times faster than the original iPhone with graphics being up to 53x faster. iOS 7 is now a 64-bit OS, but it's backward compatible with all the currently available 32-bit apps.

The A7 also supports OpenGL ES 3.0, which opens the door to even higher-quality graphics, allowing for real-time computation of effects such as depth of field, blur, full screen vignettes and lens flares.

The processor is accompanied by the M7, a motion co-processor, which measures motion data continuously from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. Along with the new motion sensing API in iOS7 will enable a new generation of sports and fitness apps, which can read and monitor your physical activity much more accurately. The advantage of its presence is also directly related to the battery life as these apps will only "talk" to the dedicated M7 processor instead of reaching to the power-hungry main CPU.

What's more, regular apps will now have more information about things such as your mode of transportation. Thanks to the M7 processor, the Maps app, for instance, would be able to automatically switch to pedestrian mode as soon as you pull over your car and get out.
 

8MP camera

The new camera has a wider f/2.2 aperture (as opposed to f/2.4) and a 15% larger image sensor, which however is still 8MP. The larger surface has allowed for larger, 1,5 micron pixels (as opposed to the usual 1.4 micron ones). A larger camera sensor provides the benefit of lower image noise in low-light conditions and better tonal dynamic range in high contrast scenes.

There is also a new double LED flash on the iPhone 5s, which Apple has dubbed True Tone, called this way because it allows to achieve more accurate colors tone. It consists of two LEDs, with each having a different color temperature. By analyzing the scene, the iPhone 5s would decide what mix of the LEDs' color temperatures is needed to achieve a naturally lit scene. The dynamic mixing of the LEDs color temperature allows for up to 1000 variations of the light output temperature.

The camera also comes with new image stabilization, albeit digital one. It works by taking four photos with a short exposure time. Then the best parts of those photos are combined into one image with as little noise, subject motion, and hand shake as possible.

There is also a Burst mode, which would shoot up to 10fos for as long as you keep the on-screen shutter pressed. Best of all, it would analyze the stack of burst photos and would automatically offers the ones it finds to be the sharpest. It will even rule out the ones on which your subject(s) has blinked.

The iPhone 5s camera will also capture 720p videos at 120fps, allowing it to create slow-mo videos. Another new feature in video recording is the addition of 3x zoom, accessible with the well-known pinch gesture. Our favorite digital video stabilization has been even further improved.

The industry-leading Panorama functionality has been improved, too. The Panorama would reach up to 28MP and exposure will adjust automatically as you pan with the phone instead of being fixed on the initial values, which get set at the start of the shooting of each panorama. This way all areas of the panorama image - both shadows and highlights - come out nicely exposed. Plus the Panoramas on the iPhone 6S are captures at 30fps, twice as fast as on the iPhone 5.

Touch ID

As plenty of rumors suggested before, the new iPhone 5s indeed sports a touch sensor embedded into the Home button. It's called Touch ID.
The Touch ID sensor is hidden behind a sapphire crystal lens. Around there is a metallic ring, which would detect the presence of your finger and activate the sensor without you pushing anything.

The concept behind Touch ID is providing enhanced security in the sense that you can set it up to work instead of a passcode lock (which half the iOS users never use, as Apple's Phil Schiller said on stage).

The scanner supports multiple fingerprints and since it recognizes the owner, it can allow you to log on more securely to various services and even make purchases from the iTunes store, for instance, without the need to enter your password.

Touch ID can store multiple fingerprints and can read them at various angles.

Misc

The iPhone 5s will offer 10 hours of 3G talk time, up to 250h of standby, up to 40h of music playback. These numbers are the same as on the last year's iPhone 5, which is a nice achievement, considering the twice as fast CPU and GPU.

The new iPhone 5s will be available in black and white fronts as before. The new option for a Golden back adds a third variety. The newly available colors are Space Gray (Black+Gray back), Gold (White+Golden back), and Silver (White+Silver back)

As expected the iPhone 5s will be priced just as the iPhone 5 - in the US, at least, it will cost $200 for the inadequately equipped 16GB version, $300 for the overpriced 32GB version and $400 for the splurge 64GB edition.

The iPhone 4S 8GB will be heavily discounted and will be selling for free on a two-year contract. Sadly, the iPhone 5 will be discontinued, obviously to make way for the iPhone 5C.

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5C will launch on September 20 in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the UK. China is in the first wave for the first time.

By December the new iPhones will be available in over 100 countries, including for the first time NTT DoCoMo carrier on Japan.
