Panasonic's new 20" Inch OLED Tablet

- Thursday, August 29 No Comments
Panasonic announced a Windows 8-powered 20″ tablet with 4K resolution at CES in early January this year and has since shown it off a few more times. The company has announced what it will also be bringing its products to IFA and a 20″ 4K tablet is on the list.

Panasonic's new 20" Inch Tablet with OLED_NewVijay

So, why is Panasonic showing the same tablet over half a year later?

It seems it’s not the same tablet – Panasonic calls it the world’s thinnest and lightest 20″ 4K tablet (like there are a lot of those), but the key is in the screen tech, it’s OLED. The one from CES had a IPS LCD screen instead. As fans of OLED screens, we’re eager to hear more about this tablet – starting with the price.

By the way, Panasonic called the tablet from CES “4K”, but that’s not quite true – 4K UHD is 3840 x 2160, while the actual tablet resolution was higher – 3840 x 2560 (15:10 aspect ratio) – so there’s a chance the IFA tablet has the same resolution.

The other item of interest (to us) on the list is the Lumix GX7 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (but this one is already official).

New Nexus 7 leaked image and system specification

- Monday, August 26 No Comments
Now that’s a doozy, isn’t it? Before proceeding, let’s take a moment for that to better sink in. In addition to support from the AOSP, one of the hallmarks of the Nexus program has traditionally been the availability of factory restore images. This is more than a simple convenience for Nexus device owners. Rather, it allows for users to safely and reliably restore their devices to their factory state.

As a result of the availability of factory restore images, Nexus device owners always had a safety net available for when (not “if” here at XDA) they decide to leave the confines of stock software and venture into the realm of aftermarket development. And the loading of unsupported firmware was always a relatively supported task, as evidenced by the availability of the simple command fastboot oem unlock.

There have been minor inconveniences along the way, however, as exemplified by the Nexus One and Nexus 4 factory images. Ultimately, these issues were all resolved in some way or another. For the Nexus One, HTC was able to release factory images. And for the Nexus 4, Google released the images after some time had passed. However one thing links these devices, along with the new Nexus 7 (2013): Qualcomm.

New Nexus 7 leaked image and system specification_NewVijay

As a quick refresher, the Nexus One used the original Snapdragon system-on-a-chip with a single core Scorpion CPU mated to an Adreno 200 GPU. The Nexus 4 uses the Snapdragon S4 Pro, which features four Krait CPUs and an Adreno 320 GPU. Finally, the Nexus 7 uses a potentially lower-binned Snapdragon 600, which has been relabeled as an S4 Pro. And coincidentally, all of these devices have faced significant setbacks in their factory image availability.

The suspicions of Qualcomm’s intrusion into the procedure were then confirmed by the former technical lead of the AOSP, Jean-Baptiste Queru, when he wrote the following on Google+:

Well, I see that people have figured out why I’m quitting AOSP.

There’s no point being the maintainer of an Operating System that can’t boot to the home screen on its flagship device for lack of GPU support, especially when I’m getting the blame for something that I don’t have authority to fix myself and that I had anticipated and escalated more than 6 months ahead.

While this was the most clearly the issue has thus far been stated, his followers knew something was amiss ever since JBQ tweeted on the matter back on July 30th:

That feeling when lawyers sabotage the launch you spent 6 months working on? I haz it. Sad sad sad sad sad sad.

The bottom line of the factory image drama is simple: We currently have no officially supported way to factory restore our Nexus devices. We don’t know if this will be solved by Google and Qualcomm like it was for the Nexus 4, or if this will remain a longer-standing issue requiring the intervention of an OEM partner, as was the case with the Nexus One. And finally, this forced the man ultimately in charge of the technical side of the Android Open Source Project to resign.

Luckily, there are options available for users looking to restore their factory firmware, thanks to XDA Senior Member ATGAdmin who released a factory restore package for users in need. In fact, a certain editor-in-chief of a certain mobile development forum’s news site already had to make use of such accommodations after some late-night flashing without adequate precautions left him with an unusable slab. However, these images are unsupported, and it would ultimately be better if they were to come from Google themselves.

Download PhoneLocator Pro for Android Device

- Sunday, August 25 No Comments
Lately our smartphones have become one of our most precious possessions, partly because they store so much of our private data but also because they are usually quite expensive. That’s why theft is as great a worry as it ever was, while misplacement is quite the nuisance. Luckily we’ve got remote management and phone tracking apps to help us in these times of distress. Recently, Google has also recognized the importance of remote tracking our smartphones and has delivered its first attempt in the category.

Download PhoneLocator Pro for Android Device

PhoneLocator Pro is one of the most functional `third-party application for the Android platform, that helps you track and remotely manage your smartphones. Today, we will take a look at the features and the functionality of the app to see if it’s worth your cash.
Title

Key Features:
With PhoneLocator Pro, you can track your phone’s position and manage them with a set of security features. A computer with an active internet connection or a cell phone, which can send text messages, is what you need to start tracking your device.

When the app is launched for the very first time, it allows you to set a web interface account, which can be used to monitor your smartphone whenever you need it. You are further required to tune few settings, according to your preferences and that’s it, you are done with your part.

Download PhoneLocator Pro for Android Device

PhoneLocator Pro now allows you to trace your smartphone on Google maps, and learn about its traveled distance. The app also takes a picture from the front-facing camera of the device when there are unsuccessful unlock attempt and the image is sent to your email address immediately.

The best part of the app is its audio recording capabilities. The “record audio” feature records the sound in the vicinity from the device’s microphone and again, the file with the recording is sent to your preferred email within a few seconds. This unique feature can be initiated from the web interface and our tests revealed that the recordings were of pretty high quality.

The list of useful features with PhoneLocator just continues with its lock and unlock with Wi-Fi option. It allows you to keep your smartphone unlocked on known Wi-Fi networks (of course you need to feed your networks to the app before it starts functioning), and will immediately lock the device once you leave the network.

The SIM card swap protection option is another cool feature of the app. Once a SIM card is registered with the app, this feature will prevent unauthorized SIM changes and will lock your smartphone as soon as the registered SIM is removed.

PhoneLocator Pro also has the ability to auto enable the GPS, whenever required to get the accurate positioning and the location of the device. However, this feature is limited to experienced users with rooted phones.

Lastly, the PhoneLocator Pro app can be hidden from the app drawer, so that no one knows about your secret security guard. You can also retrieve the app as and when you require, using a few pre-set codes or commands.

Verdict:

If you are worried about your expensive smartphone being lost or stolen, then PhoneLocator Pro is just the app that needs to be installed on our device. The app is a great choice as far as security is concerned, but works nicely as phone tracker and phone finder too.

The app works reliably anytime and anywhere in the world. And, the host of the features PhoneLocator Pro offer is hardly matched by any other app in the market.

Since, the app runs in the background most of the time, it does take its toll on the battery, but it is overshadowed by the fact that the app secures your smartphone all the time. To send the commands from the web interface and to communicate with the app, the device needs to have an active internet connection. And we did notice that the app consumes a lot of data while communicating with the web interface and also when the audio recorded, image files are being sent to our address.

All in all, PhoneLocator Pro is one of the best and most accurate tracking applications available for Android devices. Install the app and don’t worry about your smartphone being lost or stolen ever again.

Apple iPhone 5c Press Photo Leaked

- Friday, August 23 No Comments
Everybody is talking about the affordable iPhone which will reportedly go on sale as iPhone 5C. We’ve seen dozens of iPhone 5C leaked cases, parts, and spy shots, but somehow the iPhone 5C press photos didn’t hit the web. Well, until now, as a Romanian retailer has sent in a couple of iPhone 5 press photos to Mobilissimo.ro

Apple iPhone 5c Press Photo Leaked_NewVijay

The Romanian publication writes that we are actually looking at the dummy case that will replace the iPhone 5C on the retailers’ shelves until the real model is shipped. Even so, the new iPhone 5C press photos seem to confirm most of the rumors that made the headlines over the past couple of months, as the affordable iPhone will have a plastic case and a new design for the speaker located on the bottom of the handset.

Rumor has it that the iPhone 5C will replace the iPhone 5 in Apple’s portfolio, as last year’s iOS-powered flagship will no longer be available for purchase after the iPhone 5S is officially unveiled.

If the rumors are accurate and the iPhone 5C is indeed an affordable alternative to iPhone 5, then we should expect the new handset to share the hardware platform of the iOS-powered smartphone launched in 2012. Thus the iPhone 5C might be underpinned by Apple’s A6 SoC with dual-core 1.3 GHz CPU and PowerVR SGX 543MP3 GPU, while sporting 1 GB of RAM.

There will probably be three internal storage options for the iPhone 5C: 16, 32, and 64 GB and since the smartphone will come with the A6 chip, also expect it to pack LTE connectivity, along with WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, and Apple’s proprietary Lightning USB port.

The iPhone 5C will also borrow the iSight 8 megapixel camera mounted on the back of the iPhone 5, with autofocus, LED flash, simultaneous HD video and image recording, touch focus, geo-tagging, face detection, panorama, HDR, and support for 1080p@30fps video recording. Since Apple doesn’t want fragmentation to become a problem of iOS, the iPhone 5C will come with a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD display with a resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels.

Sources say that the iPhone 5C will debut synchronized with the iPhone 5S and the launch of iOS 7, so the affordable terminal will run the latest iOS iteration out of the box. Surprisingly enough, one of the leaked iPhone 5C press photos you can see in the gallery below, shows the iOS 6 icons instead of iOS 7.

Reports are indicating that both the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S will debut mid-September, hitting the market less than a couple of weeks after the press event. It seems that the iPhone 5C will not be that affordable after all, sources close to the Cupertino-based giant claiming that the off-contract price will be of around $500.

BLU Life View 5.7 Inch Review Budget below $300

- Monday, August 19 No Comments
The Life View is an interesting mashup of good and bad components, all of which are likely combined in an effort to keep the price down below the $300 mark. First, let's start with the dimensions. Its 5.7-inch size means it's going to be a little larger than a Samsung Galaxy Note II and the same as the ZTE Grand Memo.

Still, it can't really be called a KIRF this time around, as it doesn't necessarily emulate any mainstream phones from the big names -- heck, there simply aren't many 5.7-inch phones on the market at all (who knows, the Galaxy Note III may change that, but nothing's official yet). At 61 x 82.5 x 8.9 mm (6.34 x 3.25 x 0.35 in), it's slightly taller, wider and thinner than the Note II, and we feel that the 8.9mm frame helps just enough to keep it comparable in terms of comfort.

Granted, we recently used the Sony Xperia Z Ultra -- a 6.44-inch device -- so our hands have been reasonably stretched out as a result. That said, the edges are straight enough and the plastic back has a gradual HTC One-like curve to make it easier to grip, so that's certainly a good help. The biggest sacrifice you'll have to make comfort-wise is its weight: 7.76 ounces (220g) is absolutely massive no matter how you hold it, and the extra grams take its toll on you almost immediately.

BLU Life View 5.7 Inch Review Budget below $300 mark_NewVijay

It features a 720p display, which means you'll enjoy a pixel density of 258 ppi. This isn't amazing by any stretch, but we're not expecting 1080p quality from a budget-minded smartphone of this size, so it certainly fits within the bounds of our expectations. It's brighter than we expected and the viewing angles are pretty good. Having an LCD panel, however, means that you won't see the level of color saturation that you'd get on an AMOLED like the Note II -- although that's not technically a bad thing. Despite the positive impressions, we can't shake the feeling that there's still a little bit of graininess when we have a more careful (read: nitpicky) look at the screen; most people likely won't notice and even if they do, they probably won't mind it so much.

BLU Life View 5.7 Inch Review Budget below $300 mark_NewVijay

Remember how we mentioned earlier that the Life View has a variety of good and bad components? Let's dive deeper into this. The device and its dimensions are smack-dab in the middle -- not amazing but not terrible either -- but it also features high-res cameras (12MP and 5MP on the back and front, respectively) and Bluetooth 4.0 while opting for a smaller battery and shunning LTE, NFC, dual-band WiFi and a few other features entirely.

The Life View comes with a 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek SoC, which is a 28nm process that utilizes Cortex-A7 cores. MediaTek has cornered the market on lower-end devices, and our preliminary performance metrics are quite mixed. In real life, the phone does plenty fine when subjected to the usual less-intensive tasks, but there's a noticeable delay on more heavy workloads. It uses a PowerVR SGX544MP GPU, which again isn't going to rock anybody's world; a few quick benchmark tests indicated pretty slow performance, but it'll likely do the job for anyone trying to keep an eye on their wallet. Lastly, the handset also comes with 1GB of RAM.

BLU Life View 5.7 Inch Review Budget below $300 mark_NewVijay

Since the unit we received has preliminary hardware (and we suspect the firmware is as well, though the phone insists it's up to date), we don't want to give final judgment on build quality. The back is separated into three parts: an aluminum middle and plastic top / bottom for dual mini-SIM access (yep, it uses the old-school SIM cards) and wireless signal attenuation. It also features a metal power button and volume rocker on opposite sides of the device, but the keys jiggle around loosely in the pre-production version. We'll have to wait until we see a finalized unit before giving any feelings about its durability, but let's put it this way: we really want to give it the benefit of the doubt here, and hope some big changes have come about since our unit was built.

Dimensions 161 x 82.5 x 8.9 mm (6.34 x 3.25 x 0.35 in)
Weight 7.76 oz. (220g)
Screen size 5.7 inches
Screen resolution 1,280 x 720 (258 ppi)
Screen type IPS LCD
Battery 2,600mAh Li-Polymer (non-removable)
Internal storage 16GB
External storage microSD, up to 32GB support
Rear camera 12MP, LED flash, image stabilization
Front-facing cam 5MP
Video capture 1080p / 30 fps
NFC No
Radios HSPA+ (up to 42Mbps) 850 / 1900 / 2100; quadband GSM / EDGE
Bluetooth v4.0
SoC MediaTek MT6589
CPU 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A7
GPU PowerVR SGX544MP
RAM 1GB
Entertainment FM radio
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, WiFi Direct
Wireless Charging No
Operating system Android 4.2.1 (proprietary)

All told, it's important for us to remember exactly what kind of intended audience BLU has with a device like the Life View. The company, as it's done for as long as we can remember, is aiming to sell a respectable low-end 5.7-inch device for under $300, so we don't expect power users to be drooling all over it -- it's not a perfect device, but plenty of people on a budget won't mind in the least. And at this very moment, it's the best option you have for a larger smartphone without forking out twice as much. We've got a full spec sheet below for your enjoyment.

New Firefox Smartphone available on eBay

- Sunday, August 18 No Comments

The Spanish had first dibs on ZTE's Open smartphone, but earlier this month we were told Americans and Brits would eventually be able to buy the Firefox OS device through ZTE's local eBay storefronts. Well, the pages are now live, so in exchange for $80 or £60 (delivery is free), you can get yourself an unlocked Open in the eBay-exclusive orange hue; and, if the stock figures represent all ZTE has to hawk, it appears this initial batch will sell out before too long.

We wouldn't say the handset's performance is good enough to disguise its miserly specs, but having a new mobile OS to poke around in for well under a Benjamin? Let's just say that we're having a hard time suppressing the impulse-buy urge.

Apple iPhone 5s comes with 128 GB

- Saturday, August 17 No Comments
It is all but certain that Apple will be unveiling two new iPhone models, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, on September 10. Both devices have been leaked numerous times and have provided us some valuable information and now, we have an interesting prediction from a popular analyst, who claims that Apple will be launching a 128 GB model of iPhone 5S.

Apple iPhone 5s comes with 128 GB_NewVijay

According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will also be selling its iPhone 5S with a whopping 128 GB of storage. If the predictions from the analyst, who has been quite accurate in the past, turn out to be true, then iPhone 5S will be the second Apple product after iPad 4 to feature the massive storage capacity.

The 128 GB model of the iPhone 5S would cost $499 (on contract) under the Apple's current pricing scheme.

Ming-Chi Kuo also expects the upcoming iPhone to be powered by a new A7 chip that features 1 GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The latest chip is said to be built on the ARMv8 architecture and will be 20% more energy efficient than previous A6 SoC.

The analyst also confirms that the iPhone 5S will indeed house an upgraded camera with bright F/2.0 aperture and dual-LED flash. This means that the iPhone 5S camera should have better low-light performance than the previous models.

Lastly, Apple is also expected to unveil a gold color option for the iPhone 5S in addition to the classical Black and White paintjobs.

New HTC One Max slim leaked photo

New HTC One Max Slim Leaked Image_NewVijay

To date, our glimpses of the HTC One Max (aka T6) have been limited to a few small photos. Courtesy of @evleaks, we may have a better look: he just posted what's reportedly a "non-final" (if high-quality) press image of the giant smartphone. The shot matches what we've seen before, suggesting that the One Max really is the One writ large. The only major changes are the camera flash position and the more conspicuous side trim. While the image can't reveal what's inside, such as the rumored Snapdragon 800 chip and bigger battery, it does hint that HTC's supersized device could launch relatively soon -- possibly at IFA

Next Apple iPhone 5C will be in Plastic Body and Cheap Price

The latest report on Apple says the company's board is putting pressure on CEO Tim Cook because the lack of innovation in Apple's latest (and probably upcoming) products.

The Fox Business reporter Charlie Gasparino says Apple's board wants the company to come forward with some changes without further delays. He also says despite the board is pressuring Tim Cook, his job in the company is safe.

Next Apple iPhone 5C will be in Plastic Body and Cheap Price_NewVijay

The countless rumors we saw throughout the past weeks confirm Apple is already breaking the product pattern and will be releasing a low-cost model of iPhone called 5C. We saw various live pictures of its all-plastic body and we suspect this is probably the first of those changes that the board wants. The iPhone 5C is rumored to pack the same hardware as the current iPhone 5 flagship but to drop the premium aluminum shell in favor of an all-plastic panel.

The next iPhone 5S on the other hand is rumored to bring improved camera and flash as well as a fingerprint sensor. We considered the latter an already dead piece of technology in the mobile phones, but Apple may reinvent this in some new way.

Anyway, it was about time those kind of reports start popping up. Let's face it, Apple has definitely lost some of its magic after the iPhone 4S and the innovation was pushed back in favor of slowly milking existing hardware and waging patent crusades against its rivals. Maybe the board is right to ask for changes.

Download Windows 8 Metro UI for your Android Tablet

- Sunday, August 11 No Comments
Starting with Windows Phone 7 and continuing with Windows 8, Microsoft’s Metro UI has made a strong splash in the tech community. While there are some who don’t care for the Redmond flair, many users feel that Metro UI is fun and aesthetically appealing. Unfortunately for users of other mobile OSes, Metro UI was originally intended for use only on Windows devices.

However, that has never stopped industrious Android developers in the past. Now those carrying the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 can get some Metro UI-themed goodness as well. XDA Senior Member BroBot175 has released an extensive theme to simulate the Metro experience. The application and theme is flashable via ClockworkMod recovery. Once it’s installed, the application will change your home screens to a Metro UI-like interface and theme your status bar to match. Currently, the modification is in beta testing, so there are some bugs that still need to be worked out. The number of widgets is also still growing, so by no means is this a final release. Users who enjoy it should keep up with the development as it unfolds.
